The pattern on the tent for BASE PAINT is structured out of a rudimentary parametric process in which 4 rotated squares are overlapped and then inverted. Half of the tent (the black lines) is a diagram of these squares.
The other half (the colored side) uses the negative spaces created by the lines in the diagram as a kind of color chart that documents the most used colors (based on a series of reference images) in the Haitian vernacular practice of customizing buses.
The aim is, on the one hand, to produce a pattern through exclusively objective operations; and, on the other, to create a colorful and inviting puzzle for the children who will employ the tent to entertain themselves figuring out how the graphics came together.
